posted 04/03/2012 Medfield Girls U14 Hockey wins Championship
The Medfield U14 girls hockey team won the Middlesex Yankee U14 Girls Conference Saturday night with a 3-0 over rival Norwood. To reach the finals, the girls had to battle through 3 rounds of playoffs.
In the first round the girls were down 2-1 going into the third period then, they scored 3 goals to win it 4-2. Meredith Cox and Julia MacLean each scoring 2 goals. Grace Crowell, Alexander Papantonis and Emily Ruzzo tallying assists. Skylar Flynn and Abby Carlson playing strong defense.
In the second round, again the girls found themselves down 2-1 going into the second period against a strong Andover team. They scored 3 goals in the second period and 1 more in the third to win 5-2. Meredith Cox scored a hat trick, Ellie Branka scoring a goal and an assist, Sadie Durham with a goal, Grace Crowell with 4 assists. Solid play was seen by Emily Parker, Kathleen O’Connor and Caroline Davenport.
The finals were against a strong Norwood squad who had beaten Medfield two weeks earlier. It was a defensive battle until Medfield scored midway through the second period. Medfield scored 2 more in the third for a 3-0 win. Grace Crowell had 2 goals, Meredith Cox a goal and an assist and Ellie Branka and Alexander Papantonis an assist. Emily Ruzzo and Julia MacLean were strong on defense helping Athena Papantonis (MVP for Medfield) record a shutout and her 3
rd victory in the playoffs for the championship. The Medfield girls program is still a young program, only in existence for a few years, and this is a great tribute to all the girls and volunteers who have worked with the girls through the years to build this program.
