Doug Woodruff 3 vs. 3 Friendship Tournament

The annual Doug Woodruff 3 vs. 3 Friendship Tournament is held every year toward the end of the Medfield Youth Hockey season. It is a fun filled weekend of cross ice 3 vs. 3 hockey that gives players a chance to team up with a couple of friends in their age group to play a series of rapid fire 3 minute games. Each age group is assigned an hour during the weekend in which the games are played. Teams are encouraged to wear similar jerseys. In recent years prizes have been awarded at the Mite and Squirt levels for the most creative uniforms adding to the fun.
The tourney is held in honor of Doug Woodruff a former Medfield resident and MYH coach who succumbed to cancer at age 39 in 1998 leaving his wife Gretchen and their two children. Doug’s loss was a difficult one for those closest to him. As a result several efforts were organized as a way to remember Doug while helping others. A golf tournament was held in Doug’s honor in 1999 that raised money for the Jimmy Find. In February of 2000 fellow MYH coach Neil Moses who considered Doug one of his best friends worked with others in MYH to put together the first Doug Woodruff 3 vs. 3 Friendship Tournament. The plan was to raise money to fund a scholarship for a Medfield High School student who had played hockey in the MYH program and gone on to play for Medfield High.
We are happy to say the March 2008 Tournament will be the 9th annual tournament held in Doug’s memory. The scholarship continues to be funded on an annual basis and recently we have been able to use proceeds from the tourney to help MYH families who have faced difficult situations similar to Doug’s  family.
Doug’s twin brother holds an annual Pomfret High School Alumni game in Doug’s home town of Pomfret, CT and the lobby at the rink in Pomfret has been named in Doug’s honor. Doug’s family continues to live in Medfield and Medfield Youth Hockey is proud to say the tourney in his honor has become a tradition for us, celebrating Doug, and two things that are important to all of us… friendship and ice hockey. Please plan on joining us if you can.
